Gender Equal Pricing - But Why?

At Butchers we believe strongly in equality; it is at the core of our values and in creating an all-inclusive environment for all our guests. There are two principle reasons why we have embraced gender equal pricing; the first is based on the work that we do, and the other is for ensuring equality.

Historically there has always been a price gap with men and women. Typically, it’s assumed men have short hair and women have long hair and that short hair takes less time. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

At Butchers we take extra care with our work, paying attention to fine detail, and so, regardless of length, it is the time we spend and quality of work we do that is reflected in our pricing.

We felt the only way to establish a structure based on equality, was to eliminate gender from the equation. It’s extremely important to us as hair, and similarly, gender are very fluid.

This enables us to create inclusive and safer spaces for all guests, not just those who identify within the gender binary, after all, hair has no gender.

Ninety-three percent of the LGBTQIA+ community have been misgendered at hair salons. Misgendering someone can contribute to gender dysphoria - feelings of discomfort or distress in individuals who feel mismatched between their biological sex and their gender. Doing away with gendered pricing helps reduce these feelings of discomfort or distress in guests. Giving a gender-affirming salon experience can be life-changing for the guest.

Gender equal pricing is now gradually moving to becoming the standard in the industry and we’re proud to be a part of the movement towards a more equal and inclusive world.
