Most of us have been the victim of a bad haircut at least once in our lives when the stylist "butchers" our beautiful locks. Thankfully, this modern, buzzy salon in Hackney is not one of them, with its name being a complete misnomer. In fact, we left the hairdressers with a revamped mane, thanks in large part to owner Susannah Jones' expert skills with a pair of scissors as well as her innate knack for knowing what your locks need. Little flourishes make the experience completely unforgettable - from the head and shoulder massage on arrival to balancing your chakras by finding the right Aveda scent. Not only is the salon located in Shoreditch, but it also has another branch in Hoxton and is opening a brand new salon in Camden soon too. With sustainability in mind, Butchers are all too aware that the hair industry has an environmental off-set, so are expanding their eco-minded practices and use green products across all salons.

Hackney Road’s hair scene just got a whole lot hipper, and eco-friendly. Butchers (the joint project of Susannah Jones – a former director at Aveda – and art school-trained editorial stylist Katie Knox) offers fashion-forward cuts in a minimalist, industrial-chic setting; think concrete walls and massive windows. As well as cutting-edge snips (from £60), great colour jobs are a speciality here (full-head colour tint starts at £70). Shampoos, conditioners and styling products come from natural haircare specialists Aveda.

Butchers Salon has made a new home in Camden Market Hawley Wharf, bringing its eco-conscious products and expert stylists to the heart of canal-side Camden.
With a team of discerning colourists and hair stylists, the team give a warm welcome to all. As an Aveda salon, you’ll be treated with vegan and plant-derived Aveda products and offered a stress-relieving massage or Chakra ritual during your service. Susannah Jones is bringing her successful vegan, eco-conscious and gender neutral hair styling business, Butchers Salon to the city after a number of years of building up her successful business in London. Butchers Salon got its distinctive name after Susannah and her best friend and business partner, Katie Knox visited a former butchers shop in East London and thought the name would be a real talking point for a hair salon.

We visited Butchers before Christmas as Lisa walked us through the salon, their ethos, their plant based product range and additional spa service. Oh, and meeting Bruce the dog, of course.
If you jump over to Butchers social media you’ll see their feed awash with bright hair colours and bold makeovers. We couldn’t visit without getting a pop of colour, so pink it was. Taking first steps into colour we wanted it to be subtle and Lisa hit the nail with the colour we had.

As I watched the stylist glide the brush through my freshly bleached hair during the blow-dry, I couldn’t believe just how many flyaways were blowing free. In a bid to get some answers, I reached out to Dominic Roach, creative director of colour at Butchers. “Weak, breaking hair is an ever-present problem for many heads amongst us, however, with guests now returning to us in the salon after such a long winter lockdown, the problem does seem to be more prevalent,” he says.
